Crafting New Years’ Resolutions is a task that most people take on half heartedly. Often, Americans choose broad goals like “lose more weight” or “go to the gym.” However, these goals often lack passion and aren’t SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-based). As someone who wants to better herself and the world around us, I crafted 20+ Sustainability Resolutions for 2020 for you to consider adding to your list!
Below are low cost or free example resolutions from easiest to hardest in each category.
2. Switch the lightbulbs in and around your home to LEDs only. They now make soft-white ones so you don’t have to deal with harsh lighting if that’s not your style.
3. Set your thermostat at 68 in the winter or 72 in the summer.
4. Give up paper towels- switch to rags, cut up T-shirts, old towels, etc.
OR find a local compost pile to add to (some garbage & recycling companies have this or community gardens)!
Obviously this list is not comprehensive of every sustainable habit you could take on in 2020. However, hopefully this gives you a good touching point to pick 1 or 2 sustainable resolutions that will push you outside your comfort zone wherever you are in your sustainability journey.
IMPORTANT: Sustainability isn’t about doing things 100% right all the time. Making moves toward sustainability is effective when imperfect people try, educate, and grow together. Trying and failing even 50% of the time is better than not trying at all!
